Digital Equipment Corporation

Digital Equipment Corporation was a pioneering American company in the computer industry. It is often referred to within the computing industry as DEC (this acronym was frequently officially used by Digital itself,[1] but the trademark was always DIGITAL). Its PDP and VAX products were arguably the most popular minicomputers for the scientific and engineering communities during the 1970s and 1980s. DEC was acquired in June 1998 by Compaq, which subsequently merged with Hewlett-Packard in May 2002. As of 2007 its product lines were still produced under the HP name. From 1957 until 1992 its headquarters was located in an old wool mill in Maynard, Massachusetts.
Digital Equipment Corporation should not be confused with Digital Research; the two were unrelated, separate entities; or with Western Digital (despite the fact that they made the LSI-11 chipsets used in Digital Equipment Corporation's low end PDP-11/03 computers). Note, however, that there were Digital Research Laboratories where DEC did its corporate research.
The company was founded in 1957 by Ken Olsen and Harlan Anderson, two engineers who had been working at MIT Lincoln Laboratory on the TX-2 project. The TX-2 was a transistor-based computer using the then-huge amount of 64 K 36-bit words of core memory.
When that project ran into difficulties, Olsen and Anderson left MIT to form DEC. Venture capital of about $70,000 was provided by Georges Doriot and his American Research and Development Corporation. AR&D later sold its investment in Digital for approximately $450 million, certainly the best VC return ever to that point. At the time, the VC market was hostile to computer companies, and investors shied from their plans. The original business plan named the company "Digital Computer Corporation," but AR&D required that the name be changed to DEC. Instead, DEC started building small digital "modules" such as flip flops, gates, and transformer drivers that could be combined to run scientific and engineering experiments. In 1959, Ben Gurley started design of the company's first computer, the PDP-1 (PDP being an initialism for Programmable Data Processor) as a means of attracting VC funding. As he put it, "We aren't building computers, we're building 'Programmable Data Processors'." DEC began operations in a Civil War era textile mill in Maynard, Mass., where plenty of inexpensive manufacturing space was available.

Liquid Crystal Display

A thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD) which uses thin film transistor (TFT) technology to improve image quality. TFT LCD is one type of active matrix LCD, though it is usually synonymous with LCD. It is used in televisions, flat panel displays and projectors.

Small liquid crystal displays as used in calculators and other devices have direct driven image elements – a voltage can be applied across one segment without interfering with other segments of the display. This is impractical for a large display with a large number of picture elements (pixels), since it would require millions of connections - top and bottom connections for each one of the three colors (red, green and blue) of every pixel. To avoid this issue, the pixels are addressed in rows and columns which reduce the connection count from millions to thousands. If all the pixels in one row are driven with a positive voltage and all the pixels in one column are driven with a negative voltage, then the pixel at the intersection has the largest applied voltage and is switched. The problem with this solution is that all the pixels in the same column see a fraction of the applied voltage as do all the pixels in the same row, so although they are not switched completely, they do tend to darken. The solution to the problem is to supply each pixel with its own transistor switch which allows each pixel to be individually controlled. The low leakage current of the transistor prevents the voltage applied to the pixel from leaking away between refreshes to the display image. Each pixel is a small capacitor with a layer of insulating liquid crystal sandwiched between transparent conductive ITO layers.

The circuit layout of a TFT-LCD is very similar to that of a DRAM memory. However, rather than fabricating the transistors from silicon formed into a crystalline wafer, they are made from a thin film of silicon deposited on a glass panel. Transistors take up only a small fraction of the area of each pixel; the rest of the silicon film is etched away to allow light to pass through.

The silicon layer for TFT-LCDs is typically deposited using the PECVD process from a silane gas precursor to produce an amorphous silicon film. Polycrystalline silicon (frequently LTPS, low-temperature poly-Si) is sometimes used in displays requiring higher TFT performance. Examples include high-resolution displays, high-frequency displays or displays where performing some data processing on the display itself is desirable. Amorphous silicon-based TFTs have the lowest performance, polycrystalline silicon TFTs have higher performance (notably mobility), and single-crystal silicon transistors are the best performers.

ALTA Land Surveys

Real estate transactions generally need a land title survey to document important details influencing the ownership of the land, such as improvements, easements, rights-of-way and other elements. It provides evidence of any matters that may affect the title or value of the property that are included in record documents and that physically exist on the property.

An ALTA land survey is a survey that is generally required on commercial property transactions. Commercial properties include: restaurants, convenience stores, motels, shopping centers, warehouses, manufacturing plants, service stations, hotels, resort properties, individual retail units, automotive dealerships, office buildings and industrial complexes. In a commercial property transaction, a lender, title company or owner may require a land title survey which meets the ALTA/ACSM Minimum Standard Detail Requirements. Additionally, an ALTA survey shows improvements, easements, rights-of-way, and other elements impacting the ownership of land. It provides the title company with the information required to insure the title to the land and improvements to the high degree that a commercial development may require.

An ALTA survey is usually ordered by a lending institution when a piece of commercial property is being mortgaged or upon completion of a construction project in order to release the funds being secured by the project. Sometimes, a lending institution may require an ALTA survey for a residential mortgage too. Most residential parcels are not required to have this type of survey, though there are some cases that a Title Company will require this type of survey to be done.

t was too good to be true. Just when we thought we might actually have a day free from Apple rumors (after all, doesn't Microsoft deserve to have the rumor mill to itself for at least a little while?), ThinkSecret has hit us with word that the "true" video iPod is still coming, and that it will have a 4-inch display, rather than the 3.5-inch one that was claimed in earlier rumors. ThinkSecret also reports that the video iPod is on target for a March or April release, pending content deals with studios (which we assume will come through, given that Steve Jobs basically owns Disney now). Of course, even if the video unit is delayed, we assume Stevie will still schedule another big press conference sometime in the next few weeks. After all, Apple has yet to announce the Intel-powered eMac and the pleather case for the shuffle.

VoIP has been marketed as the affordable alternative to traditional land line calling since it first started being advertised in commercials years ago. As a stand alone product the pricing seems too good to pass up, especially with the promise of quality voice communications for less but is it really an affordable option that anyone can afford?

The technology of broadband phone typically allows for calls to be made domestically for one small monthly fee throughout the country on the most popular calling plans and usually has very low international rates associated with the plan as well. Technology has allowed for better voice quality so that you never even notice a difference between VoIP service and your old phone line. It is a great advancement for consumers and businesses worldwide looking to make calls for less, or is it?

VoIP is the abbreviated terminology for Voice over Internet Protocol. The keyword to look for in this definition of VoIP is Internet. The word Internet means that this technology cannot be accessed without an Internet connection and while it may not seem like much, the word Internet in relation to VoIP is everything.

The truth is, in reality it will only be as affordable as the Internet providers will allow. Your Internet connection or the lack of thereof is a pricing factor that must not be forgotten when considering the move from traditional phone service to broadband phone. You need a minimum of 90 Kbps upload and download speed to run VoIP from your Internet but if you use your computer for browsing the web with the service you may find you need a lot of bandwidth to function while talking over your service.

As with most tech tools, modern printers have more bells and whistles than most people bother to learn about. But a little knowledge can go a long way. Today I've got a few tips for saving on ink, paper, money and time while you print.

Current Selection:- Why waste toner printing online ads, navigation elements, or other extraneous junk? Or what if you just need to print a phone number or graphic, rather than an entire page? You may already use page range printing, but most programs allow you to print even smaller portions of a document.

Print Preview:- Printouts don't always come out looking like you'd expect, especially when printing from the Web. For instance, when printing directions from Google Maps, I often get a page at the end of the printout with nothing but a header and footer. In cases like these, it pays to use your browser's Print Preview function to make sure what you see really is what you'll get.

Duplex Printing:-Many larger printers offer an automatic duplexing option, allowing you to easily print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Unfortunately, the option is not always enabled by default. If you're not sure whether your printer is capable of duplex printing, look in the driver settings or on the printer's configuration page for information on duplex or double-sided printing.

All-In-One:- Windows users may also want to try out a copy of FinePrint. FinePrint installs as a go-between printer driver, providing WYSIWYG preview, n-up printing, and other functions regardless of the software or printer being used. vPIP for Video

Hi Everyone,

Today I am going to discuss a couple of great ways to embed video on your site. These players will allow you to play video that you have hosted on your own site, or on one of the common video hosting sites. The examples I will show you today are from some videos I have hosted on blip.tv.

The first player is from vPIP.org. vPIP stands for videos Playing In Place, and was developed by Enric Teller. vPIP differs from other methods by playing video directly within the page rather than opening up a new window. Thumbnail images are used as placeholders for the video, and there are two options for viewing the video. The first is the “Embed” option to play video directly in the page in place of the thumbnail, and the second is the “Thickbox” option to play mid-screen with the background darkened out. vPIP also gives you the flexibility to offer your viewers different versions of your video. In the example below I have both the QT and Flash versions that open in the ThickBox. Note that if you click directly on the thumbnail, you will get only the QT version. This can be set up in advance to play the format of your choice. I am not going to give a detailed description of how to set up vPIP because I can’t write anything more clear than the install and user guide wikis that already exist. Additionally there is a Google user group for vPIP for posting questions on. Enric is very responsive and has helped me out in the past.

Markets slump on banking worries

In New York the Dow Jones Industrials tumbled 194 points, more than 1.5%, in early trading before recovering.

London's FTSE 100 index was down 2.7%, in Paris the Cac 40 slumped 2.9% and Frankfurt's Dax fell 4.1%.

The Bank of England on Monday made an extra £5bn ($10bn) available for UK banks to borrow to ease credit fears.

The money was five times over-subscribed.

Meanwhile, on the markets US, UK and European banks were hammered; Lehman Brothers fell 30%, UBS lost 13%, HBOS 10% and Commerzbank fell 7.9%.

Investors are worried that the collapse of Bear Stearns, one of Wall Street's biggest names, is a sign that the credit crunch is getting worse and lending might seize up.

Much of the discussion centred around the relaunch of the FBJ, and the incident where some white journalists decided to attend a private meeting, addressed by ANC president Jacob Zuma, open only to current and former black journalists.

He also believed there was a possibility, due to the controversy in the build-up to the event, that white journalists might have been allowed to attend.

Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe, who convened the discussion, asked: "Is it wrong for the victims of apartheid to withdraw as a caucus and discuss how far we have come?"

The South African Human Rights Commission was on Wednesday due to hold a hearing into the matter and the broader issue of exclusive organisations.

Commission CEO Tseliso Thipanyane remarked: "If the SAHRC finds the FBJ guilty of racism and sends them to court, we will be accused of being white puppets."

He said that since the South African National Editors' Forum was not in favour of the formation of the FBJ, it could be assumed that the move to resuscitate the organisation must have come from black journalists.

The SAHRC has come in for repeated criticism whenever it has attempted to look at the issue of racism. When the commission led an investigation into racism in the media, said Thipanyane, they were "thrashed" in the same media - and only last year, a senior ANC member said the media were "obsessed with race".

Thipanyane said factors which inhibited discussions on race included white guilt, black people turning a blind eye to incidents of racism and the fact that racism was an unpopular topic.

"We must not delude ourselves that after 14 years we are out of the woods. It happened in Rwanda; it can happen anywhere," said Thipanyane.

Duarte said that although 48 percent of media management was black, this did not mean the media had really changed in South Africa.

"The media is part of the problem and not the solution. It assumes a holier-than-thou attitude," said Mothobi Mutloatse, a seasoned journalist and independent publisher.

Cloudy visions of the future

The change is described in Nick Carr's new book The Big Switch, where he argues that computing power is becoming a utility.

He believes that instead of owning our own processors we will soon be renting time on large systems run by the likes of Google and Amazon, not just for storing data but also for running code.



Carr sees strong parallels between the way electricity generation shifted from local generators in factories to a national grid providing voltage differences where they are needed and the move from local to central processing.

In the world Carr describes most processing takes place in "the cloud", and the computers we actually use will manage the interface and the communications, but do little of the real work.

It is a compelling vision, though not without its problems.

Computing is not a simple service like electricity, and it's not clear that we can solve the administrative problems needed to have business-critical services hosted remotely.

Moving everything onto the network may appeal in the rich countries of the industrialised world but offers little to rural India or sub-Saharan African countries.

And there are massive security and data management issues to be solved.

Even so, the potential benefits are too great to be ignored, and we're likely to see a range of services go live next year that will, if successful, take us closer to the cloud computing model.

It will not be an overnight shift, but when we look back in a decade or so I think we'll see 2008 as the year things started to change
